Indian Education Tutor 
 
Title:  Indian Education Tutor / College Resource - 
 
Location: Limestone, Angus, High School 
 
Contract: 180 Days with Potential for Summer Hours/(part-time), (under 30 hours weekly)
 
Hourly Wage: $25/Hour
 
Status:  Non-Exempt
 
Grant Requirement:  Must be Native American (verification required in accordance with program eligibility).
 
Job Description: 

We are seeking a dedicated and culturally knowledgeable certified teacher to fill the role of Native American Tutor. This position is open exclusively to individuals who are Native American, in alignment with our commitment to supporting the cultural identity and academic success of Native American students.

The tutor will be responsible for developing and implementing lesson plans tailored to individual and group academic needs, with a strong emphasis on culturally responsive instruction. In addition, the position requires participation in key academic support periods at the high school during August, May, December, and Fridays of each week with duties related to scholarships, academic advising, and college/career readiness.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide academic tutoring in core subject areas (math, reading, writing).

  • Create and implement individualized lesson plans based on students' academic needs.

  • Develop and integrate cultural lesson plans that reflect Native American heritage, values, and traditions.

  • Work collaboratively with school staff and families to support students’ academic progress and engagement.

  • Assist students during August, May, December, and Fridays of each week with:

    • Scholarship applications

    • Academic planning and support

    • College and career fair preparation and participation

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with Native American youth and communities strongly preferred.

  • Strong skills in lesson planning, student engagement, and academic intervention.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.

  • Understanding of college and career pathways for high school students.

GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

-Demonstrates mastery of related subject matter, instructional skills, and resource materials for the course(s) taught.

- Creates lessons or support that align with current state and district standards

- Communicates and works collaboratively with classroom teachers and staff. 

- Maintains a safe, organized classroom/area that supports students’ independent learning, collaboration, and choice.

- Utilizes a variety of effective instructional and management techniques.

- Provide consistent, immediate feedback to student learning and asks analytical questions that elicit students’ responses that incorporate prior knowledge, life experience, and interests that are directly related to the content objective.

- Monitor and maintain a positive classroom/tutorial environment that supports the school-wide behavior expectation in which most students are engaged, incorporates mutual respect, and provides collaborative learning opportunities.

- Uses available technology/instructional media to enhance students’ learning experiences.

- Establishes and maintains appropriate relationships with students, parents, staff, and community members by communicating tactfully, courteously, and confidentially.

- Appropriately communicates and interacts with other professional staff in academic planning and school committee work.

- Attend and participate in Indian Education staff meetings, extra-curricular/school-related activities, and committees (if warranted).

- Demonstrates a commitment to continuous professional growth and works with the administrator to formulate and complete professional development as deemed by the Oklahoma State Department of Education and Sand Springs Public Schools.

- Maintains a professional appearance and demonstrates behavior that is conscientious and responsible.

- Engages parents and guardians in the education of their children.

- Does not engage in discriminatory practices, including race, origin, gender, socioeconomic status, disability, religion, or political beliefs.

- Abide by state statutes, school board policies, and regulations.

- Performs other job-related duties as assigned by the site administrator.

 

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

- Knowledge and application of Sand Springs Public Schools District and departmental policies and procedures

- Knowledge and application of appropriate teaching strategies and methods

- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relations with co-workers, vendors, students, parents, the general public, and others having business with the school district

- Skill in operating a personal computer utilizing a variety of software applications and equipment

 

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

- Specialized teaching assignments may require additional training and/or certification.

- Must pass an initial fingerprint and background clearance check and maintain a valid fingerprint clearance card in the classroom.

- May be required to lift and carry heavy, bulky supplies and materials weighing up to 20 pounds.

- May be required to work outside regular working hours.

- May be required to travel to perform work functions.

 

CERTIFICATION:

Applicants must be appropriately certified AND highly qualified. To be correctly certified and highly skilled, successful candidates must hold a current teaching certificate issued by the Oklahoma State Department of Education. They must meet the following criteria: Valid Oklahoma Teaching Certificate. Pass an OSBI background check.
